Dear Friends,
Over twenty plus years of marriage and ministry I can always count on things getting interesting when Daren is away! Recently was one of those times. Daren had left for the week to attend the International Council meetings for ACTION in Manila and it didn’t take long for it to get REALLY interesting….
I woke up at 1:45am to a loud rushing sound like hard rain. I ran downstairs and immediately found myself in ankle deep water on the ground floor. The downstairs plastic water valve from the wall had burst sending water out of the wall into the bathroom. Since the hose from the washing machine was in the drain on the floor the water could not escape and soon had turned our first floor into a pond of sorts! I turned off the water main and cleared the hose from the drain. It was pouring over the 4 inch lip between the bathroom and the rest of the house. The water began to drain and then I waded into the living room to see how big the problem really was. The best I could determine was that minimally we were wall to wall from kitchen, hallway, and living room in two inches of water. At two in the morning, I don’t think very clearly so I walked back and forth, up and down the stairs looking for a broom. We have them all over the house but I couldn’t seem to find one. I finally settled on the one in the kitchen. I opened the front door and began sweeping the water outside. As I was sweeping, I kept hearing a crackling noise and the lights seemed to be flickering. I kept hoping it wasn’t serious and that I wouldn’t get shocked since I was standing in the water. Then, the wires gave way and shorted. No power. I was standing in complete blackness.
After things were cleaned up I couldn’t go back to sleep because my mind was so full. It is only the Lord that brought these things to mind at that hour so I wrote them down. These are the positive things from my perspective about this situation:
· I heard the water and woke up BEFORE the power went out
· I got most of the water out of the house before we lost power
· I didn’t get electrocuted (which I found out later was a real probability and my teammates swear that my ‘guardian angel’ was working overtime!)
· We did not lose power on the next floor where the kids were sleeping
· We have always wondered what would happen if our house flooded. Now I know where the low parts are and which direction to sweep.
· The flood water was clean and not from the sewer and/or street
· I was awake and able to spend time contemplating God’s goodness in it all
· I had the physical ability to clean it up
· I can call for a repairman to fix it and I am able to pay him
After all of this contemplation, my thoughts drifted toward heaven…this was a bummer but in heaven….
· There will be no cheap plastic pipes – no pipes at all
· I won’t sleep through trouble – no need for sleep and no trouble!
· No need for battery operated lights, or candles
· No need for electricity (which is out 3-4 hours a day of late!)
· The food in the refrigerator will never spoil – no fridge – food is always fresh
· Water will always be in its rightful place
My thoughts continued….
** I will never grow tired or weary again
** I will not be lonely or alone
** My rest will be sweet
** I will never sin again
** There will be no more “goodbyes”
** No more tears, pain, misunderstandings, sickness, soreness, or death
** I will be with Jesus everyday
After this early morning contemplation and my coffee, I took Face to Face, one of my favorite prayer books and read this…
Philippians 4:11-13 – “May I learn to be content in whatever circumstances I am. Whether I am in need or in abundance, whether I am filled or hungry, let me learn the secret of being content in any and every situation. I can do all things through You, the One who strengthens me.”
It amazes me the ways the Lord uses Scripture in just the right way to fill a need at just the right time. So…
What awaits me today? What awaits you today? Whatever it is, God will give us the strength to be victorious!
For the Becks in Cambodia,
Jodi

When I arrived as a single in Cambodia in 2003, the Lord led me to start a discipleship house through a local Cambodian church. It was during that time, as I sought out Christian books to use with the men at the house, that it became apparent that solid Biblical books were very limited in the Khmer language, and the resources that were available were often poorly translated, with many spelling and grammatical errors. God began to guide my heart to work towards seeing more Biblical resources translated into the Khmer language as well as participate in making those resources the highest quality possible, doing the work “heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men” (Colossians 3:23, NASB95). With this goal in mind, in 2005, I began work on a Khmer spelling checker, since none existed at that time. The spelling checker now has about 80,000 words and continues to play an essential role in Khmer publications...

Dear Friends,

I’m a pretty amiable guy for the most part. Typically my disposition never gets too high or low. But even after rearing four children and experiencing all the sleepless nights that go with it, I simply do not appreciate being woken up unnecessarily out of a sound sleep. However, for whatever reason I actually function at a pretty high level if I happen to be awakened at night. The drawback is that once I am awake I don’t go back to sleep – bummer. Right now we’re now coming into the dry season here in Cambodia, which I like to think of as the official start of the “Wedding Season”. Rain is not expected anytime soon so everyone rushes to get married (and to enjoy their accompanying celebrations). IF you are still reading this….you must be wondering - How in the world do my sleep patterns, weddings in Cambodia and ministry in general tie in??? Probably not as perfectly as I think but if you’ll indulge me I’ll explain.
Take this morning for example. It is 3:45AM, at least that’s what my phone read. I hear the distinct sound of wedding music being piped through our open window. For some reason I recognize that it is not too close (like right next door) but within a few blocks. I was tempted to try and quickly close our window but alas I knew it was too late! Now, realize you really can’t appreciate our wedding music unless you’ve experienced it but suffice to say it is not altogether soothing several hours before the sun comes up. BTW – if you really need to experience it for yourself you can check out this
link and make sure you turn up the volume ALL the way for the full affect. In a traditional Cambodian ceremony the music is a call to friends, neighbors and interested parties that something big is happening. And it is very much a “CALL”! They find the biggest speakers around, hoist them up on a pole and let ‘em rip! There can be no doubt in anyone’s mind in the community what is taking place because your walls literally shake with the announcement! When the wedding begins (usually after sunrise) there is a private ceremony that takes place that is primarily for the families of the Bride and Groom (a recent picture of our friends, Kosal and Karona, is attached). Gifts are exchanged and the respective families give their blessing to the new couple. The event is a huge source of honor for both families, signifying that they have passed their heritage on to the next generation. At some point after the ceremony there is a party where everyone is invited where they invariably serve a massive, out of proportion (at least by our economic standards) feast. My favorite part of these festivities is when they roll out THE FISH (see attached picture)

which is a delicious delicacy that demonstrates the great care the new Bride and Groom have taken to indulge their guests. Each person is expected to bring a gift (usually money) along with their invitation - which was carefully hand prepared and delivered in person weeks before the wedding!
When I popped out of bed this morning I was not feeling the love for my adopted culture. Not only had my sleep been interrupted but I know good and well that these kind of events are so over the top that they typically put the bridal party in debt for years! But in God’s providence He graciously allowed me to get my day started early. In my early morning Bible reading I was lead to Revelation 19:6-10, which says:
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. “And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb….”
In many respects the traditional Khmer wedding serves as a wonderful picture of what each of us should be looking towards in the future! An Invitation has been sent that announces that THE Bridegroom of the Ages is coming back for His Bride (Is 25:6-8, Matt 22:1-14, 25:10, 2 Cor 11:2, Eph 5:25-27). And there will be a celebration, like the universe has never seen, at least for those who are ‘Blessed’ (Rev 19:9). Is the event costly? It was paid in full with the Blood of the Bridegroom Himself. But what glory it brings to the One who reigns eternal, and Who is the Almighty! While there is great anticipation for the participants there is also a sobering reality for those not in attendance. This event will signal the beginning of judgment (Rev 19:11-21), a judgment that stands as a brutal contrast to the permanence of the eternal marriage of Christ to the Church.
His CALL cannot be ignored because it is an inevitable reality as sure as the sun will rise on the earth today. Can you hear the music? It is the CALL of the Bridegroom to His Church my friends! Let every tongue, tribe and people on earth know….call them to the Feast of the Lamb. Thank you for allowing us to participate in seeing the Khmer Church prepare for that day! May we be about the Bridegroom’s business with an abiding love and passion until He returns for what is rightly His. Come Lord Jesus come.
In His Bonds,
Daren

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14; ESV). We are thrilled to announce that the translation of the children’s manual “Learning About Jesus” is complete! The book contains thirty lessons, each with a verse for memorization, a short teaching, a story and a coloring page.
Please continue to pray that the Lord would use this book to bring many children to Himself. Already, more than 500 of the books are being used in various ministries throughout Cambodia. Bible-centered books are hugely lacking in Cambodia, and children’s resources, even more so. Thank you for your prayers and financial support which enabled us to translate and print this book.

Happy New Year! This past month has been a whirlwind of activity. It started with the Shalom pastor’s training workshop, where Pastor Sopheak and I instructed several church leaders in the use of the
Design for Discipleship books by the Navigators. I also taught two sessions on how to study the Bible—particulary on the relationship between exegesis and exposition. It was really the first time that I have had the opportunity to pass on some of the teaching I received in seminary to pastors here. I cannot fully express the joy I experienced as I taught what has been entrusted to me to other faithful men and to see them encouraged and excited to learn more from God’s Word.
In correlation with the pastors workshop we did a pre-release of the first three books of the Design for Discipleship series so that...
